Rabbit Scientific Names
Due to the fact that rabbits are such a diverse species there are several scientific names for rabbits. In general terms of speaking rabbit scientific names would include the 8 genera of classified rabbit species. They currently include the Pentalagus, Bunolagus, Nesolagus,Romerolagus, Brachylagus, Sylvilagus, Oryctolagus and the Poelagus.
In addition to the genera names which most rabbit raisers would definitely never use on an everyday basis, there are the male and female scientific names.
A male rabbit is referred to as a “Buck” and a female rabbit is referred to as a “Doe”. Additional Tidbit: Many times on rabbit pedigrees for instance a father will be referred to as a “Sire” and a mother as a “Dam”.
Also a young rabbit is either called a kitten or kit in scientific terms.

You will find the Pygmy Rabbit in the Brachylagus genera. The Genus name being Brachylagus and the species name being B. idahoensis. Binomial name: Brachylagus idahoensis .
Size: The World’s smallest leporid is the Pygmy Rabbit, weighing between 375 and 500 grams at adulthood.
Habitat: Great Basin area of the western USA

Bunolagus
In the Bunolagus genera you will find the Riverine Rabbit, commonly nicknamed the Bushman Hare or simply the Bushman Rabbit. Its genus name is Bunolagus and its species name is B. monticularis, which form the Binomial name of: Bunolagus monticularis.

Nesolagus
The genus Nesolagus contains two species including the Annamite Striped Rabbit and theSumatran Striped Rabbit. Their Binomial names are Nesolagus timminsi and Nesolagus netscherirespectively.

Oryctolagus
The famous European Rabbit is found inside the Oryctolagus genus. The European is the primary rabbit species that was domesticated to create our current domestic rabbit breeds. Their species name is O. cuniculus and binomial name is Oryctolagus cuniculus.
